Filed.—L. G. Direy has filed a petition to be adjudicated a bankrupt.
Fire Brigade.—The members of the Fire Brigade had a wet practice last night. Sparrows.—E. J. Beresford is now offering £1 per hundred for live sparrows.
Notices.—Attention is directed to two advertisements over the signature of Ruka Aratapu.
Election.—Mr. S. M. Wilson announces himself as a candidate at the forthcoming municipal election.
Parade.—The members of J Battery will parade for Commanding Officer’s monthly inspection this evening.
Salvation. —A branch of the Salvation Army is about to be started in Napier. The Army will open fire on October 1. Jacob Faithful.—We are requested to state that Jacob Faithful’s consultation on the Hawke’s Bay Spring Meeting will close on the 2nd October, Mail Service.—Sealed tenders, to be in by the 27th September, are called for in this issue for the conveyance of local inland mails.
M.U.I.O.O.F.—The members of the Loyal Gisborne Lodge met last evening, and after transacting the routine business devoted an hour to harmony. Ball.—A meeting of delegates to arrange matters in connection with the forthcoming Hospital Ball, will be held to-morrow evening.
Bankruptcy.—The meeting of creditors in McNab’s estate called for this afternoon, was adjourned till Wednesday next, at 2 o’clock on the application of the debtor, owing to the illness of his solicitor. The Captain. —A disturbance occurred in the Sydney Domain, when Smith (of Tichborne notoriety), and Captain Jackson Barry had a wordy conflict. They were surrounded by 3,000 to 4,000 persons, and Barry was rushed.
R.M. Court.—ln the Resident Magistrate’s Court to-day, an application was made to vary an order of the Court made on February 22nd, at the suit of W. Adair v. Mullooly, whereby defendant was adjudged to pay the amount in monthly instalments. On the application of plaintiff’s solicitor the order was varied as follows Amount to be paid on or before 28th November, in default five days’ imprisonment. Tenders.—Special attention is directed to the advertisement calling for tenders for alterations and additions to the Albion Club Hotel. These will tend to still further improve this already popular hostelry. We understand the present billiard room will be merged into the dining-room, making the latter a very handsome and commodious appartment. A new billiard room is to be added which is to surpass anything at present in Gisborne, and other improvements will be made. The balcony will be extended a good deal, making it a spacious and pleasant promenade.
The Marriage Act.—As it has come to the knowledge of the authorities that false declarations under the Marriage Act are of frequent occurrence attention is drawn to the following cases in which severe penalties were imposed:—ln the Supreme Court at Wellington on the 9th July, 1884, Charles Henry Monkton was sentenced to imprisonment with hard labor for a period of two years, for making a false declaration under the Marriage Act to procure his marriage with Emma Howell, a minor. On the day following Alice Lynch was sentenced to imprisonment for a term of eighteen months for also making a false declaration under the Marriage Act to procure the marriage of Charles Henry Monkton to Emma Howell, a minor. The local authorities have requested that attention be drawn to this matter.
