MEAGRE REPLY OF CHINESE TO THE FRENCH FIRE. [reuter’s telegrams.] Hong Kong, August 24. InteUigence to hand from Foochow shows that only one of the Chinese batteries by which the Port was defended replied to the fire of the French fleet during the bombardment. It is reported that one of the French war vessels was sunk by the Chinese fire. A telegram from Tientsin announces that the French Charge d’Affaires has left the town, but the Consul remains to watch the interests of French residents.
