COPPER MINING IN NELSON.

The appended information will interest holders of copper shares, of which there are not a few in this locality;— Notwithstanding little news has been reported lately relative to the development of the copper mines, at the Champion mine there are 27 hands employed, exclusive of the manager, while the United, Aniseed Valley, and Imperial Consols have four men each. Copper more or less is now being packed to Richmond every week, at a cost of £4 per ton. THE CHAMPION CO. The copper is coming out freely to grass, and a great part undergoing hand dressing prior to shipment. The main shaft is down 96 ft. At the lower levels it is intended to open out and drive to intersect the lode. When Mr. Cresswell, of the post office, last went to ‘Frisco, he took a parcel of specimens for Mr. Craig (present Gisborne agent of the N.Z.L. and Mercantile Co.), and very favorable reports from eminent American firms have since been received respecting them. The copper rock especially has attracted attention. Further packages of samples have been sent as requested. From THE UNITED COMPANY, A trial shipment of twenty tons has been sent to Newcastle. The result is anxiously looked for. THE IMPERIAL CONSOLS CO. Have put in a drive from the United Company’s ground, with the result that a very fair lode was found. Much interest is centered in this company’s workings, as their next neighbor on the due course of the lode is the erstwhile famous Dun Mountain. THE ANISEED VALLEY CO. Is one of a prospecting nature, and is doing good work. A tunnel of 220 feet has been driven, and the lode is intersected and driven on for 50 or 60 feet, with varying success. The Company are now sinking a trial winze with the view of testing the lode in depth. By following the lode down it has always been improving both in quality and quantity. The outlook for the copper mines is certainly satisfactory.
