Much interest is manifested in the race which will take place to-morrow between Beach and Hanlan, and it is thought that both will row a great race.
Some alterations made in the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club Rules recently may interest sporting readers:—ln future a “maiden horse ” will be one which has never won an advertised race exceeding 25 sovs. in value at the time of starting, instead of at the time of entry, as heretofore. Two-year olds will not be allowed to start in races exceeding a mile and a quarter. All horses must be named before 11 o’clock on the day preceding any race for which they may be entered or nominated, under a penalty of £5. An alteration in the name of a horse must be registered and a fee of £5 paid. The starter will in future be empowered to fine a disobedient jockey an amount not exceeding £lO. An owner running more than one horse in a race will not be allowed Lo declare to win with one ; he must run them all on their merits. In the event of a division of stakes it will not be necessary for a horse to walk over. Any horse in a selling race must be put up to auction if a demand is made to that effect. The old rules as to produce races were all struck out. The rule defining “ gentlemen riders ” was, after some discussion, passed as follows .—“ No persons having received payment in consideration of work performed in connection with the training or riding of horses shall be eligible to ride as gentlemen riders, unless specially sanctioned by the stewards.” A motion to amend the rules relating to weight-for-age hurdle races so as to admit three-year-olds was proposed by Mr. Danvers, but was lost.
