APPOINTMENTS GAZETTED. ACTION FOB DAMAGES. FREEMAN V. QUEEN—APPEAL. [Per Press Association] . Wellington, August 15. E. C. Scog has been appointed Vice-Consul for Denmark at Christchurch. B. M. Moorehouse is gazetted Public Vaccinator. R. C. Kirk is appointed Revising Barrister under the Friendly Societies Act. The appointment of Dr. Chilton to the Wellington Hospital is gazetted. The appointment of John Blackett as Engineer-in-Chief, and W. N. Blair as Assistant Engineer-in-Chief for the Colony are gazetted. The following Volunteer promotions are notified Hon, Captain J. A. Sonar, M.L.C., to bo Major in New Zealand Volunteer Force. Captain Patrick Monaghan, of Makara (Wellington) to be Major on unattached list. The dismissal of W. C. MacDermott, Chief Clerk of the Government Insurance Department, is gazetted, and W. W. Knowles has been promoted to the position. L. W. D. Irvine has been appointed Manager of Agents of the Government Insurance Department. It is understood that a writ, claiming £3OOO damages, was yesterday served upon the manager of a local Bank, at the instance of a gentleman who is well known in commercial circles in Wellington, who alleges that his credit has been injured through the action of the defendant in reference to certain dealings which he has had with the bank recently In the Supreme Court in Banco, in the case of Freeman v. the Queen, an appeal against the decision of a lower Court in an action brought to recover the value of a vessel which struck on a rock at Kaikoura and sank, his Honor delivered judgment in favor of the Crown with costs, holding that the authorities were not responsible, because they did not collect fees from those using the wharf in question.
