GISBORNE HARBOR BOARD.
THE OFFICE OF WHARFINGER. FOURTEEN APPLICATIONS. A special meeting of the Harbor Board was held after the Council adjourned, all the members being present. The Clerk said the meeting was called for the purpose of receiving applications for the position of wharfinger. There were fourteen applications. The conditions were read. The following applications were read: —
Mr. Joyce moved, “ That the application of Mr. Baldwin be accepted.” He was one of the lowest tenderers, and was well known as a capable man. Mr. Lewis seconded. Mr. Tutchen proposed, “ That Mr. Witty be permanently appointed to the office.” He had carried on the duties for some time and had given every satisfaction. They had previously had to raise the salary to the sum now asked for by Mr. Witty, and he was sure the duties could not be efficiently performed for a less sum. Mr. Townley seconded. Mr. Kenny proposed Mr. W. E. Cross, but there was no seconder. The voting was—For Mr. Baldwin : Messrs. Hepburn, Brown, Joyce, and Lewis. For Mr. Witty : Messrs Townley, Tutchen, Kenny, Moore, and Smith. The Chairman declared Mr. Witty duly appointed. The Chairman said it was necessary to pay Mr. Rees a retainer fee of £5 ss. Mr. Joyce proposed, and Mr. Smith seconded, that the amount be paid. This concluded the business.
