SPORTING.
AUSTRALIANS V. ALL ENGLAND. (reuter’s telegrams.) London, August 11. Murdoch and McDonnell continued to maintain an excellent stand against the English bowling, and scored rapidly, notwithstanding the frequent changes of bowlers. The board showed 200, and they were still at the wickets ; but shortly afterwards McDonnell was caught, when the score stood at 203. His innings afforded an excellent display of batting, and he was loudly applauded on his retirement. Scott was next man, and proved an able partner to Murdoch, who was batting in grand form. Scott speedily collared the bowling, and aided Murdoch in further augmenting the score,
which soon ran up to 300, an additional 63 being made when the stumps were drawn for the day, the scores standing as follows:— Murdoch, not out .. .. 145 McDonnell, c .. .. .. 103 Scott, not out .. .. .. 101 Bannerman, c .. .. .. 4 Extras .. .. .. 10 Total for two wickets ... 363 August 12. The cricket match at the Oval was resumed this morning. Continued fine weather prevails, and the attendance on the is ground enormous. The not outs of yesterday (Murdoch and Scott) took their places at the wickets,
and in first over Scott, after making one run, was caught, and the partnership which had proved so successful, was dissolved. Scott then retired with 102 to his credit, and was warmly cheered for his splendid innings. Giffen now joined Murdoch, and for some time runs continued to mount up rapidly, the South Australian being in good form, and the Captain batting most brilliantly, and with perfect freedom. Four hundred was posted on the board, and Murdoch and Giffen were still at the wickets, but before many more had been added Giffen was caught, after contributing a well played 32. Bonnor was the next man in, but was unable to make any
stand, having only made 8, when he was caught. I’lay was then suspended tor lunch, Murdoch’s score standing at 190, not out» The score is 5 wickets for 452.
The latest information gives the score at 8 ’wickets for 538. Murdoch wss caught when he had scored 211.
