Canterbury Cup (Nominations).—Cheviot Carlton, Krupp, Lady Emma, Lady Evelyn, Guides, Liverpool, Eskatos, Minerva, Charmer, Nelson, b. c. by Musket—Aconite,’ Pearl, Leonora, Welcome Jack, Black Rose, Leon, Marquis, My Idea, Tasman, Trenton, and Necklace.
Dunedin, August 4. Th? Dunedin Jockey Club has raised the Dunedin Cup to 1000 sovs., and the Jockey Club Handicap to 400 sovs.
Auckland, August 4. The twelve hours' walking match was won by A. Hendry, who covered 63 miles 7 laps, AUSTBAUANS V. PLAYERS OF ENGLAND. VISITORS AGAIN VICTORIOUS. GROUND RUSHED BY A MOB. [bevtbb’s tblbcbamsJ London, August 1. The cricket match, Australians v. Players o£ England, resulted in a victory for the former by nine wickets. A disturbance took place during the afternoon. When luncheon hour arrived the Australians wanted only 11 runs to win, but the match was suspended for lunch. A number of spectators became angry in consequence, and a mob rushed the ground and uprooted the stumps. The disturbance, however, only lasted a few minutes, as a better feeling prevailed among the the majority of the spectators, and when the Australians again came to the wickets they were loudly cheered. A later message of the same date says i— The cricket match at Kennington Oval, Australians v. Players of England, concluded to-day. The weather was splendid, and the wicket in much better order than yesterday. There was a large attendance of spectators, and the home team, with 1 wicket down and five runs up, continued their second innings, which closed for a total of 71 runs. Ulyett and Peate were the only batsmen who were able to make any stand against the bowling of the visitors, which, especially on the part of Spofiorth, was most effective. His analysis showed 6 wickets for only 30 runs. Ulyett scored 81, c; Peate, 19, b. The Australians, requiring only 28 runs to win, went in for their second innings, when the requisite number of runs were secured with the loss of only one wicket (Bonner, b, 12), and the visitors were thus victorious by 0 wickets.
