Customs Returns.

[Per Association Telegiumh.] Wellington, August 3. The Customs revenue for the Colony for the last month is of a much more favorable nature than that of the preceding month. Last months returns are not yet complete, three or four small returns having yet to come in; but the amount so far is near £lBl,OOO as against £103,127 17s. 6d. for June, while for the corresponding month of last year it was £110,030 12s. 9d, At the four centres last month the amounts collected were—Auckland, £28,406 os. Id. ; Wellington, £22,665 Bs. ; Christchurch, £20,183 IBs. 9d ; Dunedin, £37,976 14s. sd. In each of these four towns the amount is largely in excess of the previous month, being between £5,000 and £6,000 at Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington, and at Dunedin there is an improvement of over £B,OOO. With the exception of the ports of Poverty Bay, Tauranga, Greymouth, and Riverton, an increase is shown, but returns have yet to come from Mongonui, Kaipara, Wanganui, and Picton. The beer duty returns are also favorable, that paid last month being £4,002 19s. 3d. For June it was £3,628 10s. Bd. and for July, 1883, £8,998 16s. lid. Of the amount collected last month, Auckland contributed £873 4s. 5d.; Wellington,-£384 15s. 9d.; Christchurch, £866 18s. 3d.; and Dunedin, £857 ss. Bd. A slight falling off in the beer duty is shown in the returns from Timaru, Greymouth, Blenheim, and Poverty Bay.
