Important Trial for Pirating News.
REUTER v. WELLINGTON EVENING PRESS. NOMINAL FINE TO ALLOW APPEAL. [Per Association Telegrams.] Wellington, July 31. At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon W. F. Roydhouse, proprietor of the Evening Press, was charged by Mr. E. E. Collins, Reuter’s agent in New Zealand, with having illegally published certain cablegrams within the time prohibited by the Press Telegram Copyright Act. Mr. Gully prosecuted, and Mr. E. Shaw defended. Admissions as to the publication and receipt of the cablegrams were made, and evidence for the prosecution was given in detail, after which defendant’s counsel agreed to a nominal fine being imposed, so as to allow the question to go into a higher Court, which would ultimately have to decide the case. Defendant was fined 20s. Notice of appeal was given. The question of prohibiting Mr. Roydhouse from publishing cablegrams until the decision of the Appeal Court had been obtained was mentioned, but the Magistrate stated that if the alleged piracy was continued a fresh information could be laid.
