Sir George Grey proceeds to Wellington on Thursday. James Brown, a bushman, had his foot cut off by a kauri log at Kaeo. The New Zealand Accident Insurance Company have declared an interim dividend of 3d. per share.
At the declaration of the poll for Eden Messrs. Tole and O’Neill exchanged some Parliamentary (?) epithets. The declaration of the poll for Waitemata showed Mr. Hurst to have a majority of 474. Mr. Farnall drew attention-to the fact of the
returns from Kumu not having come in, but admitted they could not have affected the result.
DEATH THROUGH DRUNKENESS. At an inquest on the body of Jas. Thomas, engine driver of the ship Rangitikei, a verdict of accidental drowning was returned, with a rider that gangways should have staunchions on both sides. Dr. Wilkins deposed that the deceased died of appoplexy through drunkenness—not drowning. FROZEN MEAT TRADE. Wellington, July 29. The s.s. Coptic sailed for Napier at 4.30 this morning from here. She took 6,000 carcases of frozen mutton, besides several quarters of mutton, and about 280 joints of beef. She has now 14,000 sheep on board, which will be supplemented by something like 10,000 at Napier and Lyttleton. THE AGENT-GENERALSHIP. Sir F. D. Bell has cabled to the Government agreeing to hold the Agent-Geneialship for a further period of two years. Mr. J. W. Bransfield contests the next Mayoralty. Declaration of the poll for Foxton :—Wilson, 612 ; Izard, 610 ; Browne, 237. BANQUET TO MR. BLAKE. Kumara, July 30. The supporters of Mr. Edwin Blake, the defeated candidate at Kumara, gave him a banquet on Monday evening. Neither Mr. Seddon, the re-elected member, nor the representatives of the Press were invited. Mr. Blake left here for Christchurch yesterday morning. THE HOP TRADE. Nelson, July 30. By the Rotorua 200 bales of hops were shipped to Sydney, and another 200 bales will be shipped next month by the lonic for London. Cable advices from London received here state that Nelson hops have the preference over Victorians of 40s. per cwt.
