The Telephone. WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE POVERTY BAY STANDARD. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING. GISBORNE, MONDAY, JULY 23.
We beg to draw the attention of our readers to the fact of a change having been made in the proprietorship of this journal, for some months past so ably conducted by Messrs. Porter and Croft. The plant and goodwill have now passed into the hands of Mr. John Mogridge, a gentleman long and favorably known in connection with the Press of this district. It is not our intention, as is often done on occasions of this kind, to treat our supporters to a catalogue of what we intend to do, believing implicitly that self-praise is without the slightest recommendation. Niger, who took the title of Emperor in the East, refused the panegyric they would have spoken in his praise, and made himself the more deserving of it by the way in which he refused it. “Make,” said he “a panegyric upon the commanders of old, that what they have done may teach us what we should do. For ’tis a jest to speak in praise of a man who is alive, and especially a prince; ’tis not to commend him for doing well, but to flatter him in hopes of a reward. For my own part I should choose to be beloved whilst I live and praised when I am dead.” Suffice it to say, then, that we shall allow no clique or party to in any way interfere with a free and out-spoken policy. The Telephone will be issued as heretofore in the interests of the public generally, and not of any section thereof to the detriment of the main body. As we look to the public for our support, so we can assure our supporters that we shall to the best of our ability make the advancement of their interests identical with our own, always endeavoring to do the greatest good for the greatest number. Any improvements which appear expedient it will be our aim to carry out. The success of a public organ lies with the people themselves. The more interest they show in the publication, the more encouragement there will be for us to push ahead. We have already made arrangements for the supply of improved telegraphic matter from leading centres, to take the place of the somewhat meagre items at present sent us.
This, of course, means exttra expense, but that will not be allowed, to act as an impediment if we can by such alteration serve any useful purpose, and supply otff readers with a more instructive digest of what is going on outside the sphere of our personal observation. We take this opportunity of referring to our country delivery, which is now almost as perfect as it is possible to make it. The circulation is large and constantly increasing, and our readers who reside outside Gisborne, can place every reliance on a regular receipt of their paper. Special attention is also directed to our ornamental and general printing department. The stock of printing material has been largely added to during the last few months, and fresh parcels are received at regular intervals. Coupled with every facility for executing any class of work, our priceswill ! be found most reasonable, facts which are best verified by personal inspection. , No effort will be spared On our part to Make the Telephone the “people’s pap*r/’ and we trust the public will see it to their advantage to second our endeavor?.
