Colonial Defences.
[Plr United Press Abhooiation,] Christchurch, July 21. A largo meeting was held in ihe Oddfellows Hall cn Saturday night to ccmsidc; the question of Colonial Defence. The Mayor presided, and the following resolutions wore passed unanimously, and ordered to be sent to the Government. 1 ; That this meeting consider it of the greatest importance that the principal ports of this colony should be put in a state of defence forthwith by mounting and placing in position twenty two heavy guns which were purchased at a cost between £40,000 and £-50,000 and which have been lying useless for about six years. 2 : That in the opinion of this meeting the limo has arrived for the volunteer force of New Zealand to be put on a somewhat similar footing to that of the Victorian volunteers viz., Principle of payment for one entire days drill in each month.
