River Conservation. The Engineer reported verbally that Mr. McLeod had asked him for £lOO as a progress payment on account of the work he had undertaken towards conserving the river bank at Ormond. He (the Engineer) was of opinion that the work had not been done to his satisfaction, but was in the right direction He did not consider the work permanent and could not recommend the payment asked for.

The Chairman said Mr. McLeod had paid more than the progress payment asked for on this work, and thought as the case was an extremely hard one, the sum of £5O might be advanced, so that Mr. McLeod could get another £5O from the Ormond Road Board.

The Councillors, while they considered the case an exceptional one, saw that Mr. McLeod had interviewed the Council, and was emphatic in saying, no cure, no pay. In the face of the Engineer’s report they did not see how they could make the progress payment.

It was finally decided that no payment should be made until the Council had received a favourable report from the River Conservation Committee at Ormond. Makaraka Well. The Engineer said that this well had again ceased to flow, and suggested that the sum of £5 be placed at his disposal to remove an obstruction found in the well at eighteen feet from the surface.
