APPOINTMENT OF A COMMISSIONER. [REUTER’S TELEGRAMS.] London, June 7. In answer to a question put in the House of Commons to-day, the Hon. Sir. Evelyn Ashley, stated that Lord Derby had received an offer from the Australian Colonies to contribute yearly the sum of £15,000 towards the maintenance of a Commissioner in the Western Pacific, who would reside in Eastern New Guinea. Sir Ashley added that Her Majesty’s Government would take steps to organise a sufficient staff to assist the Commissioner, and that the appointment of the latter would be made promptly.
