IT SERVES THEM RIGHT.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —When the Borough Council and Harbor Board advertised for a competent Engineer and valuator for the both bodies, they had an application from Mr. W. O’llyan, who is a competent engineer, as also an authorised surveyor, which I hear Mr. Reynolds is not; and I well remember Councillor Tutehen proposing, and Councillor Smith seconding, that he was ihe most competent of the whole batch, as well as having nothing to depend on but his profession for his living; and they, notwithstanding those strong arguments in his favor, only got one to vote with them, namely, Councillor Townley. But they were defeated, and the rest of the Board voted for the money lender, for reasons best known to themselves. As I say, it’s just what they might expect from a man who, I hear, has from £B,OOO to £9,000 lent out at interest—another result from trying to grease a fat pig at the other end. Money makes a man proud, and, in most instances, above his position. However, as the Borough Solicitor is in the swim, and I hear his fee is ten guineas for acting as umpire, I am anxious to see the letter opened; then we shall see clearly who we have to deal with, and whether our Council will still retain their Solicitor, notwithstanding the retaining fee paid to him. I al o hear he is solicitor for the Engineer. Sir, if true, these actions look fishey.—Yours, <tc.,
