WHO’S TO PAY?
A subject which has on many previous occasions led to much diversity of opinion, and many warm discussions again cropped up in the Borough Council on Tuesday evening, in the shape of a demand for £5 55., for the use of Parnell & Boylan’s Hall, which had been engaged for the public meeting in connection with the nomination of Sir Julius Vogel. The Chairman informed the Board that this account had nothing whatever to do with them. He had engaged the hall at the request of Mr. Chambers, who had guaranteed the payment out of the funds of the East Coast Political Association. There was he understood some £2O to £3O of this fund remaining, and if Mr. Burke applied to Mr. Chambers no doubt he would get the account. Mr. Joyce thought that those enterprising individuals who had invited Sir Julius, should pay this money. He could not see how the Council could be held responsible. Although the Mavor had engaged the Hall, he had done so as a private individual, and not in his public capacity.
It was decided that Mr. Burke apply to Mr. Chambers for the sum, and th 3 subject thus ended.
