Local and General.
School Committee.—Theordinarymontlily meeting ol the Gisborne School Committee will take place at half-past 7 o’clock this evening. Gisborne School.—The annual examination of the pupil teacher’s of the Government sehool, took place to-day, by Mr. D. Johnson Jnr., Collector of Customs. The papers will be forwarded by the next boat to Napier, for Mr. Hill’s inspection. Benefits.—ln our local on Monday announcing the benefits to be given by the Willmott Company, we omitted to state that it was under the auspices of Messrs. Locke, Gannon, and Rees, with the other gentlemen mentioned. Working Men’s Political Association.— A meeting of the above association was held last night, at the Good Templars’ Hall, when about 100 persons were present. We are unable to-night to publish our report of the proceedings, which are pretty lengthy, but will do so to-morrow.
R.M. Court. —The R.M. Court was occupied all to-day in the hearing of the case of Jones v. Mrs. Williams, as administratrix in the estate of James Jones, alias Williams. Claim £-10. A number of witnesses were examined, and after listening to lengthy arguments from the counsels, Messrs. Rees and Nolan, his Worship refused to grant a nonsuit as applied for by Mr. Nolan, on the ground that the defendant was not the administratrix of the estate of Janies Jones, alias Williams. The case is still proceeding as we go to press.
“ Imprudence.”—This bright little comedy has been selected to be performed to-night by the Willmott Company, for the benefit of the Widow, Downes, on which occasion it is to be hoped that there will be a large house. In this comedy the characters are pleasantly grotesque, while the dialogue is fresh, clever, and amusing. Verbosity.—Matters are mending in the Borough Council and Harbor Board, and the substitution of silent members in lieu of frothy obstructionists and platitudinal orators, who revel in the {sound of their meaningless verbosity, is bearing good fruit, in enabling a larger amount of business to be got through in much less time than heretofore. In this instance it may truly be said that “ if speech is silvery, silence is golden,” and the agreeable change is thoroughly appreciated by none more than those whose weary duty is to sit often for long hours and silently listen to wearying and aimless talk. The outgoing members this year are Messrs, Lewis, Tutchen, and Moore. Methodical Madness.—Referring to the fortunate winner in this town of the £750 in Ada Mantua’s Consultation on the Queen’s Birthday Cup, the Napier Telegraph says, “ His ’ madness ’ has taken a very mild form; he has come down to hear his countryman preach, and so next Sunday he purposes to be one of St. Paul’s congregation. Virtues Reward.—The action of the fates are sometimes most puzzling, and it often becomes impossible to see in its awards the just recognition which a virtuous and good act is always supposed to meet with, but which according to the following, sometimes assumes quite a contrary appearance. Giffen, the cricketer, while on the voyage home, saw a piece of orange peel on the deck. Approaching was an old lady, who would possibly have tripped on it and fallen. With one arm he held her back from the danger, and stooping down he picked up the obnoxious orange peel, and with his open palm threw it overboard. The peel was followed into the sea by two valuable diamond rings, one a cricket prize, and the other a gift of his brother.
