In six days in May last £70,600 was staked on horses in South Australia through the agency of the totalisator, yet times are said to be hard in the sister colony. It is said in Otago that the frosts lately have been the most severe experienced since the Days of the Dunstan rush, when horses and drays were taken across the ice on Waihola Lake.
