THE ELECTIONS.

[Per United Press Association.] Major Wales declines to contest Roslyn. Mr. Gore will not stand for Dunedin South. L. D. Bagnall, formerly member of the Provincial Council of Auckland, stands for the Thames seat. James Byrne, a well-known mining manager, who resided formerly in Picton, will be a candidate for that constituency against Messrs. Connolly and Eyes. The nominations are fixed for the 16th.

Sir George Grey addresses the citizens of Auckland to-morrow night. Mr. S. P. Anderson addressed the electors of Stanmore last night. He announced himself as a supporter of Sir Julius Vogel’s general policy. A vote of confidence was passed. A meeting of working men selected Mr. W. Samuels, painter, to oppose Sir Julius Vogel for Christchurch North. Mr. Samuels declined unless guaranteed his expenses and large support. To this there has been no response.

Mr. E. Shaw announces that owing to stress of professional engagements, he is unable to canvass the Inangahua district, and therefore declines nomination there. At the request of the Te Aro (Wellington) electors he has decided to stand for that district.
