Wellington, July 1, It is understood that His Excellency Sir William Jervois, has arranged to leave Wellington on the 3rd July, to pay a short visit to Melbourne on business connected with the defences of Victoria. His Excellency proceeds by the Wakatipu via Sydney, and will be absent about three weeks. THE MURDEROUS ASSAULT. Nelson, July 1. The man George Franklin was charged at the Police Court this morning with unlawfully wounding one William Maher with an axe with intent to commit murder, but was remanded and bail refused. The injured man appears slightly better this morning, but he can scarcely recover. THE WAIRARAPA’S TRIP. Auckland, July 1. The steam ship Wairarapa, with excursionists, returned yesterday owing to one of her crew being attacked with measles. The pleasure seekers were unable to land at either Samoa or Tonga, otherwise the trip was a most enjoyable one. Invercargill, July 1. The Exchange Hall at Winton, with two shops in front of the building, was destroyed by fire on Sunday night. The fire was first seen in a shop occupied by Coltman, a watchmaker. Nothing was saved from the building except two clocks. Coltman is insured for £75, but the office is unknown. The building was the property of Surman, the brewer, and was insured for £5OO in the Victoria. Dunedin, July 1. Captain W. J. Ross, formerly in command of the Union Company’s Suva, Omapere, Maori, Beautiful Star and Southern Cross, died yesterday. LICENSING DISTRICT. The City Council carried a motion to take steps to amalgamate the four licensing districts into which the city is divided. The Council refused the request of the publicans compelled to close at ten o’clock for a remission of rates.
