In the House of Lords yesterday Earl Kimberley was questioned regarding the progress which had been made in connection with the negotiations for holding the projected conference of Egyptian affairs. In 'reply Earl Kimberley stated that an agreement had been come to with the French Government as to the basis upon which the proceedings of the conference should take place, and that the matter had been submitted for consideration to other European Powers.
Admiral Sir William Hewitt, commanding the East Indian squadron, has arrived at Aden from Abyssinia. The Hon. Evelyn-Ashley, Under-Secretary for the Colonies, has proposed that the Australian colonies shall contribute their share in the expense to be incurred by the temporary extension of the powers of Sir George Desvoux, in order that the latter may be in a position to deal with the labor traffic in the Eastern Pacific, and that the AgentsGeneral for the various colonies shall afterwards discuss with the Imperial Government the question of adopting further means for regulating or for repressing the traffic in island laborers.
The homeward mails via Suez and Brindisi from Melbourne, May 6, were delivered on Saturday.
San Francisco, June 17. The steamship Zealandia, with the homeward mails dated Auckland, May 27, arrived here yesterday.
