[Pbr United Press Association.] Wellington, June 18. In the Divorce Court this morning, in the case of Edwards v. Edwards, a decree absolute was granted, and the custody of the children was on the application of the petitioner given to the mother. Auckland, June 18. On dit James McCosh Clarke will contest City East. Arrived. Barque Manbeggan, under charter to the Sugar Company, from Java, with 1500 tons of raw sugar. The sick seaman of the barque Androcles are to be brought to Auck'and and placed in the Military Hospital. LAMBING DOWN. The lambing down case against J. Adams of the Swan Hotel, broke down on a technical point. The prosecutor, N. G. Franks, is a nephew of Colonel Franks, and had on him a deposit receipt for £2,500 on the Colonial Bank, Wanganui. Some lively disclosures were made. New Plymouth, July 18. The Hannah Mokau, which was on fire when coming from Kawhia, was insured in the Union Company for £7OO. The cargo is said to be insured in the South British for £2OO. Last night a fire broke out in one of the bedrooms of the Bridge Hotel, Waitara. The fire was caused by children playing with candles, but was extinguished however before much damage wars done. Christchurch, June 18. Mr. McKay, an officer of the Mineralogical department, is now on a visit of inspection to the Malvern district, where indications of copper have been found, and his report is anxiously looked for. MR. ROLLESTON. Mr. Rolleston has written to Mr. George Haiper, Chairman of his last meeting at Papanui expressing his intention not to stand for the Avon district at the coming election, though he sees no reason to doubt that he would receive the usual vote of confidence. He had reason to believe that the electors would prefer to be represented by one who resided amongst them. Leonard Harper has announced his intention of offering himself as a candidate for Avon district. Dunedin, June 18. The shop of Mr. T. Pring, bootmaker, was broken into, and goods to the value of ,£8 stolen.
MR. STOUT. Mr. Stout has decided to offer himself for one of the Dunedin electorates. ALLEGED LIBEL. The Supreme Court to-day was occupied with the case Wright v. George Batsell, claim £250, for the publication of an alleged libellous letter. The defendant, a schoolmaster, wrote the letter complained of, a very extraordinary, communication, to Miss Stewart, a teacher in one of the city schools, warning her against. marrying the plaintiff. The defendant said he had written at the request of the girl’s mother. It appears that Wright married the girl against the wishes of her parents. Mr. A. Wattem, a member of the local Press, will oppose Mr. Green for Dunedin East.
