The Telephone. GISBORNE, MONDAY, JUNE 16. POLLING DAY.

To-day the free and independent have been exercising the great privilege, of the franchise. The candidates are on the qui vive with anxiety and expectation. Locke spoken of as the man at one street corner, Gannon at another, Rees at another. The virtues—past, present, and future—of each candidate being freely discussed, of course with the utmost impartiality. The working supporters flit from place to place, bringing up stragglers and urging waverers to decide. T aps are running freely, at the expense of course of the disinterested proprietor (?) Some of these undisguisedly bear the placards of the candidate, notwithstanding the Corrupt Practices Act to the contrary. Occasionally volleys of hurrahs, groans, and hoots are indulged in by the more enthusiastic voters. By midday some 300 had polled, and at the time of our going to press, at least another 150. The last few hours of the polling will be the strongest and most active, as many hold back for various reasons. The poll closes at 6 p.m., but the result cannot be known till about 8 o’clock. There is however but little doubt as to who will head it, and we do not hesitate in saying that the right man will be in the right place, and will not be found sitting on a rail, but in a more elevated position on the top of the poll.
