Serious Accident.—A very serious accident happened to Mr. Wall, Matawhero, last night. He was about to mount his horse, opposite the stables, when the horse turned round and lashed out, kicking the unfortunate man in a very sensitive part of the bodv. He was immediately attended by a doctor who performed a successful opperation on him. the doctor has hopes that if inflamation does not set in, he will speedily recover. He has since been taken to his home in a cab. Gisborne Institute,—The members of the Gisborne Institute held their usual weekly meeting last evening, Mr. East being in the chair. The programme consisted of readings and recitations, on which some very interestcriticisms were given. All present took part in the proceedings and spent an enjoyable time. With the fair start that has now been made the Institute should become of great benefit to its members, the number of which is rapidly increasing. Hospital.—The usual monthly meeting of the Gisborne Hospital Committee was held last night at the Court House. The Treasurer reported a credit balance of £2O. The wardsman’s report for tlie month showed, admitted 5 ; discharged 9 ; remaining 2. Accounts amounting to £ 10 were passed for payment. The application of Mr. and Mrs Benfield for the position of wardsman and matron, was accepted. Mr. Chrisp, the present wardsman, was present, ami becoming angry threatened to leave the Hospital at once, without anyone being there. The Committee considered his conduct as very shabby, and ordered the secretary to install Mr. Benfield and his wife, in their new duties at once, which he did after the meeting was over. No other business of importance was transacted.
The Willmott Company.—This company make their last appearance in Gisborne tonight. The piece is that sparkling and popular comedy of Crutch and Toothpick. We having seen it performed in other parts can recommend all those who desire a few hours pleasure to go to-night. The piece is well put upon the stage and contains nothing vulgar or hurtful to the most refined taste. This company is well deserving of patronage, and we hope to see a good house.
Civil Service Examination. —There were 80 candidates for the Junior Examinations ; 44 passed and 36 failed. Three failed in four subjects ; 10 in three; 10 in two ; and 13 in one. Twelve failed in English, 23 in arithmetic, 20 in history, and 20 in geography. Three candidates -were examined in shorthand and two failed. There were 21 senior candidates examined; 8 passed and 13 failed. Of those examined four failed in French, 2 in German, four in trignometry, seven in Algebra, one in geometry, five in history, and one in book-keeping. A Good Old Custom.—During the performance of “ The Golden Plough ” on Tuesday evening, a capital hint was thrown out to our three candidates. In the first act, Sir Francis Claude, a candidate for municipal honors, tries to imprint a kiss on the cheek of the landlady’s pretty daughter, assuring her that it was a candidate’s privilege. All would have probably gone ■well, had it not been for the untimely interference of the young lady’s lover, After this hint being thrown out, probably it would be well to Loclce our pretty girls up till the present electioneering campaign’ is over, otherwise there may be trouble among the Gisborne lovers, who will have good to cause it. No Gamnion about that.
Fire.—As the people were returning home fi om the theatre last night, between ten and half-past, an alarm of fire was raised, and a general rush made down Peel Street, where flames were seen issuing forth at the back of the premises of Mr. J. East, adjoining Mr. Can tie’s drapery establishment. A crowd had soon collected, and many willing hands went to work to subdue the flames. Buckets were obtained, and there being plenty of water, this was accomplished in a very short space of time, though considerable damage was done to the room which is a sort of store room where cases of kerosene, soap, &c. are kept. The fire evidently started in a corner of the room and travelling up the papered wall set the ceiling alight. Great credit is due to Messrs. Barnes, Outridge, O’Meara, and Good, for the energetic manner in which they worked, and we might say, but for them the result would have been far more serious than it really was. The cause of the fire is not yet known, though we hear, that charred shavings have been discovered in the corner where the fire first started.
