SPORTING.

[Reuters Telegrams.] THE GRAND PRIX. Paris, June 8. The race for the Grand Prix was run today, and resulted as follows: —

Little Duck 1 Tne Lambkin 2 Fra Diavolo 3 CRICKET.—AUSTRALIANS v. LANCASHIRE. London, June fl. The cricket match Australians v. Lancashire was resumed to-day at Manchester in fine weather and before an enormous attendance of spectators. The local team, with five wickets down for 109, continued their first innings, which after an excellent display of batting on the part of Barlow and Mr. H. B. Steele closed for a total of 195, or 21 ahead of the Australians. The highest scorers for the county were Barlow 28, Briggs 46, Steele 41. The fielding of the visitors was excellent, and alone prevented their opponents’ score being much larger than it was. After the usual interval the Australians went in for their second innings, and a splendid display of batting ensued with the result that when time was called for the day 202 runs had been put together for the loss of only three wickets. The chief contributors were Bannerman, bowled, 44; Murdoch, caught, 64; Giffen, not out, 79. June 7. There was again a large attendance of spectators, although heavy rain fell at intervals during the day, and owing to the inclemency of the weather play was stopped and the match drawn. The Australians, with the score at 202 runs, continued their second innings, and put together a total for eight wickets of 315 before play ceased. The highest scorer was Giffen, who, not out the previous day, contributed 113. Spofforth was not out with 24.

FOOTBALL.—NEW ZEALAND V. NEW SOUTH WALES. Sydney, June 7.

The New Zealand Football Team played the fifth match of their tour, when they met for the second time a representative team of New South Wales on the local ground. The weather was all that could be desired, but the attendance was only moderate, not more than 1,000 persons being present. The turf was hard and in good condition. The visitors had another easy victory over their opponents, who were completely overmatched, and only succeeded in obtaining one try, while the New Zealanders secured three goals and three tries. All the goals were kicked by Ryan, and touch-downs were secured by Robertson, Helmore, Taiaroa, and Ryan. The passing and dribbling of the visitors generally was excellent, and some splendid runs were made by most of the team, but particularly by Ryan and Warbrick.
