[Per United Press Association.] Wellington, May 30. The new scale of fees payable to the Registrar and Deputy-Registrars in the Supreme Court, is gazetted. The vacancy of the Ashburton seat is gazetted to-night. CIVIL SERVICE COMPETITION. Particulars of the competition for the Civil Service literary prize of 1884, appear in the Gazette this evening. The subject is “ Land laws and their effects socially and economi cally, upon the condition of the people.” The prize is £25, essays to be delivered before the end of the year. HOUSE-BREAKING. A man named Harry Walters, was arrested to-day, charged with house-breaking in B ro ugham - street. An enquiry will be held on the recent fire at the Arcade building. THE KANGAROO. The official enquiry into the foundering of the steamer Kangaroo, will be resumed tomorrow, and probably be adjourned for the production of further evidence. An action will be heard in the Supreme Court next month, in which Z. Nimmo, dairyman, claims £6OO from the Kilbirnie Highway Board, for alleged neglect by leaving a culvert open by which plaintiff was thrown from his horse, and sustained serious injuries. Archdeacon Thorpe has forwarded his resignation to St. Patil’s vestry. Dunning’s Opera Troupe are doing good business with “ Black Cloaks.” BARMAID IN TROUBLE. The writ in the action D mpsey v. Wake-f-.rd was . ived to-day. The plaintiff was bnmaid in defendants hotel, and claims £3OO f.n alleged defamation of character. The case will be heard on the IGlh prox. TIE GOVERNOR. His Excellency the Governor and suite> returned from Auckland by the Hinemoa at 5 o’clock this evening.
HOME MARKETS. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. (limited) reports under date London, 271 h inst.:—The wool market is unchanged. Up to date, 210,000 bales have been sold, and 180,000 bales taken for export. The wheat market is quiet. Adelaide is worth 41s. and New Zealand 395. per 4961b5.; New Zealand Tuscan is worth 41s. per 4961b5.; Adelaide T.A.Q. is worth (to arrive) 40s. per 4801bs. Tallow—beef is in demand, but mutton is neglected. Mutton and beef are both worth 375. per cwt. The leather market is firm. Best sides are worth ll|d. per lb. New Zealand hemp—common qualities are neglected, and are not worth more than £l7 pet ton; fine is worth £27 per ton. Tl v e Hinemoa returns to the Manukau this afternoon, and it is expected will bring Sir Maumee O'Rorke to Wellington. THE MAIN TRUNK RML WAY. The statement that the Government had definitely decided on the central route for the Northern main trunk line is incorrect. Mr. Mitchelson’s report will not be presented for some days yet. Christchurch, May 29. No definite reply has yet been received from Sir Julius Vogel as to whether he will become a candidate for Stanmore or not. THE TUNNEL ACCIDENT. Later information re the Lyttelton tunnel railway incident shows that the cause of the passenger train being slowed down was that the light near the Heathcote end of the tunnel had gone out, and according to rule the driver, on finding such to be the case, at once shut off steam. From the position of the goods train a collision could not have occurred. SIR GEORGE GREY. Auckland, May 30. Sir George Grey left in the Te Anau for the South. The Auckland Manufacturing Company have declared a dividend of 5 per cent. ROTORUA RAILWAY. The directors of the Rotorua Railway Company have received satisfactory assurances from the Government of doing all in their power to further the construction of the complete line. The Insurance Company’s refuse to pay the insurance claims on Wall’s drapery stock which was recently destroyed by fire. Writs have been issued against them by Wall for £4,000, Sir Frederick Whitaker being retained ior plaintiff. There is much excitement on the Thames re the stoppage of the big pump, which would practically put an end to mining operations. The proposal to deduct a shilling a week from the wages of the men is received with disfavor. It has now transpired that several promoters of the Argentine silver-plating swindle which was exposed here, have gone South to prosecute trade. The Auckland members leave Manukau for Wellington, in the Hinemra on Tuesday morning.
