J BATTERY.
The members of the J Battery were inspected last night at the Drill Shed, by Captain Winter, in the absence of Captain Porter. There was a good muster, nearly forty being present, inclusive of officers. Lieutenants U’Ren and Boylan, and Sergeant Turton put the men through their drill. The Band was also present. Three members were fined ten shillings each for being absent without leave. After the company had been dismissed a general discussion took place on various subjects, during which it was decided not to hold another ball on the 28th of next month, (Coronation Day), us they considered the piescnt depressed state of the times would prevent its being a success. A meeting will take place at some future date to wind up all business in connection with the late ball, which, we believe, was not such a success financially as it was expected it w’ould be. Notice was given that the third competition for the Champion Belt would come off on Saturday, at half-past one o’clock. Much discussion took place as to the advisability of flooring the drill-shed, as the sand was too heavy and tiring for drilling. A tender was received from Messrs. Douglas and M'Cartney, who agreed to cart clay to the shed at 2s per load. This was accepted, and clay will be laid in the shed, mixed with sand, which it is considered will consolidate and form a hard flooring. Several members were asked to do their best to try and work up an entertainment, in order to increase the Battery’s funds for the purpose of obtaining fresh uniforms and other necessaries. It was further decided that a church parade should take place next Sunday week, provided a sufficient number of members roll up.
