SOUTH PACIFIC PETROLEUM COMPANY.

The Manager of the above company writes as follows:—

It being uncertain whether or not we could put down 150 ft. more piping in present bore without becoming hide-bound, it was decided by the Local Board of Advice (who have acted upon Mr. W. J. Weaver’s suggestion in the matter) to leave the present bore in the meantime, and start a new one much lower down, with a better location. If in the new bore it is found impossible to get say 150 to 200 ft. past the bottom of our present pipe, and get through the papa, boring could again be resumed at the present bore, should the indications be sufficient to warrant our doing so. For this purpose, the bore has been left in as good a state as possible, and the derrick allowed to remain intact. Mr. W. J. Weaver (who kindly consented to go up to the springs), accompanied by Mr. F. A. Weaver, Mr. R. Cooper, and myself carefully prospected the block during our few days stay there last week, and at a full meeting of the local Board held on Monday last, Mr. W. L. Weaver having given in his report, it was resolved, after fully considering the matter, and in accordance with Mr. Weaver’s report, and recommendation, to start a new bore on the Waingaromia Flat. The new site is some 500 ft. below the present one, and 570 ft. above sea level, and is in the opinion of Mr. Weaver and the others, the most suitable of all the places prospected. Active preparations are being made to resume operations and it is expected that the same will be resumed about the midale or end of next month. An attempt is to be made to put as many as possible of the Bin. pipes in the present bore to start the new one with, and should more be required, the Southern Cross Company have kindly offered to lend us the required quantity. The Local Board, accompanied by myself, intend proceeding to the springs on Friday or Saturday next to inspect the new site and the works generally.
