Fires—Incendiarism.

[Per United Press Association.] Auckland, May 13.

Patrick Burke’s hotel and store, Ngungaru, has been burned clown. Insured for £750 in the United office.

A verdict of incendiarism by persons unknown has been returned regarding the Coromandel fire.

A fhe broke out at 11.30 last night in the Royal George Hotel, Newmarket, and destroyed, besides the hotel, the shop of Hamilton (baker) and the police station. The hotel was open at the time of the outbreak, but none of the inmates appear able to account for the five. Several of the boarders who were asleep upstairs had to escape in their night clothes, and a man named Corbett was seriously burnt in rescuing a girl named Agnes Brown, who was also injured. The hotel belonged to Odium, but was leased to Jagger, a brewer. Jagger was insured for £.BOO in the Norwich Union, and Odium had a further policy of £2OO in the same office. The stock and furniture were insured by Jagger for £9OO in the Northern. The premises of Hamilton, baker, were two-storeyed, with bakehouse at the rear, and these, with the police station, were the properly of F. G. Clayton, and was insured by him for £5OO in the South British. Hamilton’s furniture and stock were uninsured. Gonstable Graham was also uninsured; he loses £l6O worth of furniture. The stables and offices of Hammond and Byron were pulled down to stop the spread of the flames. They were insured by that firm on behalf of Clayton for £lOO in the National. Total insurance, £2,500; damage, £4,000. Christchurch, May J 6. Three empty shops and bedrooms above have been entirely gutted by fire The loss is estimated at £l,OOO, which is covered by insurance in the Standard and National offices. Carpenters had been working on the premises during the day. Napier, May 16. A six-roomed house at Havelock, was totally destroyed by fire early this morning. It was insured for £l5O in the National, the furniture was uninsured.
