INTERPROVINCIAL.
(from our special correspondent.) Wairoa, May 16. A petition signed by 100 residents in this county was sent in to the County Council meeting last Wednesday, for the construction of a bridge across the Wairoa river at Clyde, to cost £B,OOO, to be applied for under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act. After much discussion a resolution in favor of same was carried by five to four, the chairman voting against the project. There is a good deal of talk about Sir Julius Vogel and the other candidates here, but nothing will be decided till the meeting on Monday.

A young woman named Stratfort is missing from her home at Belmont. She went in search for cows, and did not return. Search parties have been out for a couple of days without success.
The Kangaroo enquiry has been adjourned until to-morrow.

Total — arrivals, 1,324 ; departures, 1,066. Arrivals—from the United Kingdom, 622; from Australian colonies, 655; from Fiji, 35; from South Seas, 12. Departures—for United Kingdom, 94; for Australia, 839; for Fiji, 18; for other British ports, 18; for South Seas, 98. Chinese—arrivals, 3 ; departures, IMPORTANT ACTION. The Secretary of Telegraphs received the following message :—The trial, Central News Telegraph Company V. Eastern Telegraph Company, concluded to-day, after nine days. The Lord Chief Justice summed up in the Eastern Company’s favor, and put to the jury the question, Did defendants, the Eastern Telegraph Company, Sir James Anderson, and Mr. Benjamin Smith (the Company’s Superintendent at Alexandria) divulge the contents of the Burleigh message, containing the news of the victory Tel-el-Kebir? To this the jury answered, No. This is a verdict in favoor of the Eastern Telegraph Company, subject to a point of law yet to be discussed. Invercargill, May 15. The insurance agents threaten to double the rates of premium unless a water supply is provided. Christchurch, May 16. Robert Hislop, who was supposed to be lost from the Lakes Station while sheep mustering last week, has returned to the station. Dunedin, May 16. Mr. Popham, formally chief officer of the Waiiarapa, has been promoted to the command of the Arawata. REMARKABLE PASSAGE. The Rupehu’s passage Home was the fastest on record, the actual steaming time being 38 days 20 hours. Auckland, May 16. The landlord of the British Hotel on principle, refused to allow the Licensing Committee to inspect his hotel, as the law made no provision for their doing so. His Excellency the Governor has received the following telegram from the Secretary of State for the Colonies :—“ It is Her Majesty’s wish that the celebration of her birthday should be defeired for one month at least. Her Majesty has been pleased to appoint the 28th June for the United Kingdom.” His Excellency notifies that the levee has been postponed in accordance with this request. Napier, May 16. At a public meeting last night J. Sheehan, M.H.R., in the chair, it was resoleed to form a Trads and Labor Council.
