ENTLEMEN, —You are, many of you, aware, that I consented to retire from contesting the election should the other two known candidates have gone with me, and, as I stated at the meeting held in the Council Chambers, that it must be with the concurrence of a very large number of my friends and supporters, whose interests I cannot permit myself to neglect. Had this been the case, I should have fulfilled my promise. But Mr. Rees’s address in last evening’s paper is all-sufficient to show that he has no intention of resigning in favor of anyone. Therefore I am now in the field with a full intention of either standing or falling, as you may accord me your suffrages. I will ask you to consider how far Sir Julius Vogel seeks to be elected—whether to serve his own interests, to propound some scheme to suit his own purpose., or to form a party of which he shall be the leader ? Further, I will ask you what can Sir Julius Vogel know of the many urgent requirements of the East Coast District; or what time would he be likely to give in enquiring into and advocating them. I shall stand by my supporters, as I look to them to stand by me. It has long been my earnest desire to serve you to the very utmost of my ability, and in the full knowledge of what you will require from me. lam not one to desert my colors to-day for something better which may be presented to my view to-
