BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Atter disposing of the business of the Harbor Board, the members held a special meeting of ihe Borough Council. AUDITORS’ REPORT. The following report was received in answer to the communication from the Board refering the last report back for reconsideration :— *•* We have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 24th ult., returning our report upon the accounts and secuiities of the Borough for the year ending 31rt March, 1884, and asking our consideration of that portion of the report which refers to the sec rity held by the Sinking Fund Commissioner’s from Mr. Hurrey. In reply we beg to state that we have given the report our careful consideration, and fail to see that we can modify it in anyway, as we were supplied with the fullest information, both from Mr. Bourke and Mr. Craig, before drawing our report, and we are still of opinion that we were in duty bound to call the attention of the Council to the fact that the insurance policy, held by the Loan Commissioners was not in order. We were surprised to observe in the report as printed by the of the discussion occurring in the Council on the subject that we were accused by Cr. Tucker of being actuated by personal feelings against Mr. Hurrey when penning our remarks upon his securities. We merely made such comments, believing it to be part of our duty to do so, irrespective of persons. We have, &c., J. C. Dunlop, J. Cbesswell. Auditors.” Considerable discussion took place on this, after which His Worship moved, “ That the Auditors’ Report be adopted.” Cr. Townley seconded.—Carried. Cr. Smith moved, “ That the Borough valuator be employed to estimate the value of all properties on which money of the ratepayers is lent by the Sinking Fund Commissioners, previous to advancing the money. A valuation fee of one guinea to be payable by the borrower.” Cr. Tutchen seconded.—Carried. This concluded the business.
