Political News.

The announcement of the vacancy of the East Coast seat appeared in last night’s Gazette, and thus officially sets at rest all matters in connection with the resignation. Nothing new has occurred to disturb the tranquility which has reigned for the last few days, and we seem to have reverted back to a state of quietude more befitting “ Sleepy Hollow,” than that of a town upon the eve of an election.

Our Wairoa corresrondent wired at noon to-day:—“ Mr, S. Locke arrived here on Wednesday to prosecute a preliminary canvass in view of the coming election. He expresses great satisfaction at the result of his visit, and feels sure of gaining the seat. But none of the electors here pledge themselves at present until all the candidates aro in the field. Politics are flat, but a general feeling of satisfaction is expressed at the resignation of Mr. McDonald. Mr. Locke left here yesterday for Napier. Mr. Gannon is mentioned by a few.

[Per Press Association.] Christchurch, May 9. Mr. Pearson, M.H.R., addressed his constituents at Ohoha, and received a vote of confidence.
