DEATH OF A REBEL CHIEF.

The well known chief Te Waru, of the Wairoa tribes has lately died at the place of his exile, near Whakatane. In the earlier days of the rebellion, this chief and his people took up arms against the Government, and committed many depredations, and acts of agression. In 1865 he and his followers, surrendered to the Government and was pardoned and some swore future allegiance. In 1868, when Te Kooti escaped from Chatham Islands, Te Waru and his people joined them, and took part in the various hostilities. In 2870 Te Waru again became captive to the Government, and was exiled to the Bay of Plenty, upon a small piece of Crown land, where he has resided quietly, up to the time of his death in April last. Te Waru was a splendid specimen of a Maori Chief of the old school. Good in feature, amply tatooed, active and athletic. He invariably wore his hair dressed a la American Indian, tufted at the top, with a bunch of feathers. A rebel to us, a patriot to his people.
