J BATTERY.
The usual weekly parade of the above took place last night. There were about twenty present, the greater portion of whom were recruits. Sergeant Major Featon and Sergeants Pavitt and Turton drilled the company. After this the orders for the month were read, which consisted of the notification of the various appointments that members had received, and that the competition for the belt would take place on the 24th instant. A meeting of the Tournament Committee was then held, the company being first dismissed. Sergeant Major Featon, occupied the chair, and said that the first business was the passing of the accounts in connection with the Tournament, which were satisfactory, and showed that they had done a good deal of work for small expense. With the exception of a small amount it had not been a drag on the corps. Sergeant Pavitt now produced a statement of the receipts and expenditure for the same. The former came to £7 Ils. the latter to £ll 3s. 2d. The statement was adopted on the motion of gunner Willoughby. It was agreed to write to Mrs. Rees who had gone round and canvassed the ladies of the town for subscriptions for prizes, thanking her for her assistance. A meeting of the finance committe then followed. Present, Messrs. Featon, Pavitt Allom, Whitby, and Creswell. Sergeant Pavitt stated that there was a balance of £l6 3s. lOd. in hand after the expenses of the tournament &c., had been deducted. This did not include subscriptions collected for this year. Sergeant Major Featon said it would be better to discuss the question of the clothing of the corps on Saturday night next, when more information would be to hand. This was agreed to. The next was the election of a committee to manage the affairs of the ball which is to take place during the month. The following were elected as ball committee : Messrs. Creswell, Allom, W. O’Meara, Pavitt. Carter, Hansen, Turton, Fyson, Barnes, and B. O’Meara, with the officers of the corps. On the motion of Sergeant Pavitt, gunner Creswell was appointed secretary for the ball committee. After a lot of talk it was decided that the ball be held on the 23rd, as the 24th fell on a Saturday. The meeting then adjourned till Monday night at seven o’clock.
