By telegram we have just received we are informed that “ Mr. Allan McDonald left by mail. Did not resign.” What we are to understand by this is, doubtless, that either Mr. McDonald has obtained leave of absence, or has placed his resignation in the hands of his friends before embarking, with a view of adding one more discreditable act to the list of trickery which he has thought fit to practice in order that his party might reap some doubtful advantage. There can be little question but what such conduct will ultimately have the opposite effect to that intended, and that the man and his party will undoubtedly suffer at the next election through the mean humbugging and trickery which has of late been resorted to. Had the electors known the precise state of affairs a petition would undoubtedly have been presented to our representative (?) long ago calling upon him to resign. We must still exercise that patience which has been so greatly strained of late, and in the course of a few more days all will be known. Later.—Just prior to going to press we received the following:—“Napier, 3.55. Auckland telegrams say McDonald left yesterday, and has resigned.” The uncertainty increases I
