Bakkhpptcy.— There are 42 bankrupts waiting for their discharges at Christchurch. Union 8. S. Service.— The Rotomahana sailed from Melbourne for the BluU on Thursday afternoon. French Convicts.—The Melbourne Trades Congress has passed a vote of protest against the deportation of French convicts to the Pacific. Draughts Match.—A challenge has been thrown out by J. 0. Mackay, of Dunedin, to B. Boswell, of Christchurch, to play a match at draughts for £5O or £l.OO a side. Wesleyan Crurch.—The reception soiree and concert given to the Rev. Geo. J. Spence was held last night at the Wesleyan Church. There was a large attendance and everything passed off satisfactorily, making the affair a complete success. The Rev. J. McAva occupied the chair, who with others addressed the assemblage.
Robson’s Diorama. — This diorama was again shown last night to a highly appreciative audience. Funeral.-—The Maori church.bell tolled forth this morning, announcing the funeral of the Native Hehemira, who died a few days back, across the river. Supreme Court.—The next sittings of the Supreme Court to be held at Gisborne will take place about the middle of next June. Forgery.—The R.M. Court will be occupied all day to-morrow in the hearing of a further case of forgery against the prisoner Tamati Hautapu, who was committed for trial on Thursday for the same offence. R.M. Court.—Judgment in the ease of McDonald v. Barker was given in the R.M. Court to-day, in which after reviewing the circumstances of the case, Mr. Booth gave judgment for the defendant. Makaraka.—The Rev. G. W. J. Spence will conduct service in the school house at Makaraka on Sunday next. Turanganui Road Board. — The annual general meeting of ratepayers of the above board will be held at the court house, Tologa, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon of Saturday, the 3rd of May. J Battery.—The following promotions have been made in the above Battery:— Gunner Allom to be Acting Sergeant; Gunners Fyson, Hansen, O’Meara, and Morrison (2) to be Corporals; Morrison (1) and Barnes to be Bombadiers.
