The Late Collision.
[reuter’s telegrams. Melbourne, April 8. The Wairarapa-Adelaide inquiry was continued to-day. The witnesses who were on board the Union steamship confirmed the evidence taken at Dunedin. Mouatt, the engineer, corroborated the statement that the remark made by Mr. Mills regarding the race was merely jocular. Other witnesses denied that the Wairarapa waited for the Adelaide, and blamed the bad steering of the latter vessel. Mr. David Mills, agent of the Union Co., testified that he never arranged a race between the vessels, and that the statement of Mr. Turnbull, the Adelaide’s agent, to the contrary was incorrect. The enquiry stands adjourned until tomorrow, when Messrs. Gillies and Kerf ord, who were among the passengers, will be examined.
