The Late Collision.

[Reuter’s Telegrams.] Melbourne, April 7. The Wairarapa-Adelaide enquiry was resumed this morning. Altogether there are seventeen witnesses from the Adelaide and eighteen from the Wairarapa to be examined. April 8. During his examination at the Adelaide-Wairarapa enquiry to-day, Mr. Turnbull, the Adelaide agent, testified that no arrangement was made for a race between the two vessels. He stated, however, that he visited the Wairarapa on the previous day, when Mr. David Mills, the Union Co.’s agent, jokingly suggested to the enginineer that ho should show the Adelaide a clean pair of heels on the trip down the Bay. It was, consequently, decided to delay the departure of the AdJ ude, in order to avoid the race, and the subsequent starting together was accidental.

Captain Lockyer, of the Adelaide, testified that, on flwiviiigat Williamstown, the pilot on board the Wairarapa shouted from the bow that they were waiting for the Adelaide, and he replied, “ All right.” The Wairhrapa then whistled. The Adelaide did the same, and went full speed ahead. Mr. Turnbull and Capt. Lockyer both deposed to bad steering on board the Wairarapa. Mr. Popham, chief officer of the Wairarapa, stated that the Wairarapa did not wait for the Adelaide. He declared that the Wairarapa was splendidly steered and kept a straight course, but that the Adelaide yawed about. His evidence was corroborated by that of the third mate — Mr. Anderson,
