Local and General.

Mail Notice.—The mails per Southern Cross will close to-night at 7 o’clock. Rowing Club.—The trial fours race is to come off on Friday and Saturday. As they have not, up to the present, decided the time at which the races are to be rowed, we are unable to give our readers any 'further information upon the subject. The Shortest Time on Record. — The Harbor Board meeting on Tuesday evening was the shortest one on record, having occupied little over an hour. We sincerely hope that this will prove a precedent which will frequently be followed.

Contempt op Court.—During the hearing oi the breach of the Dog Registration Act cases a tike without a collar, and in utter contempt of the nature of the proceedings, had the temerity not only to walk into Court, but actual!}' to wag his tail while looking at Mr. Bourke in a very “ please-will-you-find-me-a-master ” way. It is needless to say the dog was of Scotch origin. The Opera “ Patience.”—The commendable enterprise of Mr. S. Stevens, in affording the residents of the Bay an oppoortunity of witnessing the above renowned and popular opera, will no doubt be fully appreciated and meet with its just reward by drawing a crowded house on Friday night. It would be superfluous for us to descant on the merits of the performance, as it must be seen to be appreciated. Gisborne Istitvte.—A meeting of the Committee of the Gisborne Instute was hold in the Library Building last evening. Present : —Messrs. Poilen (Chairman), Warren, Chrisp, Ingle, and Tharatt. Letters were read from the Clerks of the County and Borough Councils, granting the use of their rooms for the purposes of the Institute under certain minor conditions. Plans and specifications for the new room—to be used as a smoking and reading room—were laid before the meeting. It was resolved that the discussion of these, and the calling for tenders, be postponed until the next Committee meeting, as the subscriptions were not coming in as rapidly as might be desired. It was resolved that Messrs. Pollen and Chrisp be a sub-Committoe to interview those gentlemen who had so kindly promised to preside overclasses, and arrange with them to start business as soon as possible next month. The formation of a Chess Club for the winter months, Debating Class, and the making of arrangements for public lectures, &c., for the opening night of the Institute was left in the hands of the same Sub-Committee. A report to be given to the General Committee at their next meeting.

The Beacons and Landing Stage.—We again feel constrained to thank Cr. Kenny for bringing under the notice of the Board the two “ little matters” of repairs to the landing stage at the end of the Gladstone Road, and the illuminosity of the beacons. These matters, though small in themselves, tend greatly to the convenience of the public, and also show a commendable anxiety on the part of our obliging councillor to be useful in every possible way. Even as the great hill of life is made up of small grains, so is practical general usefulness attained by attention to little requirements such as these. Clearance Sale.—Mr. H. Lewis’ annual clearance sale now being on, intending purchasers of any commodity of which that gentleman is the vendor, will find it to their advantage to give Mr. Lewis a call.
