The Telephone. Published every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday Morning. GISBORNE, THURSDAY, MARCH 13, 1884. Local and General.

R.M. Court (Tuesday).—Before W. Common and W. H. Tucker, Esqs., J.P.’s Robert Flinn was charged with drunkenness, and having pleaded guilty was fined ss. In the case of Allanach v. Ra Macky, claim for £3 75., judgment was given for the full amount and costs, 7s. W. Graham v. Wi Pere was settled out of Court. In Nolan v. Francis, claim £l9 9s. 4d., on a judgment summons, Mr. Kenny, who appeared for the plaintiff, said that defendant had agreed to pay £lO on Monday, March 17, and the remainder on or before April 14. Judgment was given accordingly, with costs, £3 25., in default 14 days. A Good Sign.—We are pleased to hear that the Natives of this district are going in largely for sheep-breeding, and are importing large numbers of good stock. Amongst others we hear that 500 sheep have just been placed on Rakaiketeroa.

All Nonsense.—We fully appreciate the disinterested kindness displayed by “a contemporary ” in its endeavors to place matters clearly before the public, and can only attribute its present mistaken zeal to an overweening anxiety for our welfare. We have submitted the “statistical” paragraph complained of to the crucial inspection of numerous sharp-witted gentlemen who do not wear green spectacles, and they, with ourselves, fail to see what connection the figures contained therein had to do with the statistics for Poverty Bay. “ Our contemporary” is the only one who has connected Poverty Bay with the figures given, and, as “ one good turn deserves another,” we beg to inform them that the “ statistics ” were taken from an old file containing “this day’s ” telegrams and relate to a large and populous centre. But “it is needless to say this is all nonsense.”

A Little Welcome Excitement.—ln these quiet and depressed times the smallest novelty in the shape of excitement is gladly welcomed, as it tends to relieve, in some degree the ennui which has of late proved somewhat oppressive. From this point of view we have again to thank our Volunteer Band for coming to the front and giving us some good and : enlivening music. To-morrow (Friday) night the band will assemble at the drill-shed, about 7.30 p.m,, and forming a procession, will march through' the town by torchlight. A Sensible Resolve.—The County Council have resolved, by adopting the specifications of the new nightsoil contract, to settle all differences which may arise between the contractor and any householder ; also that, if it is proved that the conditions of the contract has not been effectually performed, the same shall thereby be nullified. Dead Animals.—A most useful clause has been inserted in the new’nightman’s contract to the effect that, upon due notice from the Inspector of Nuisancess or any householder, the contractor shall at once bury, six feet deep, any dead animal which may be found lying about creating a nuisance. County Council.— All those who have bought or sold rateable property within the Cook County during the past twelve months, and have not given due notice thereof to the Council, are reminded that, unless they attend at the Council meeting, to be held at noon to-day, and make due objection to the rating list as now compiled, they will have no further opportunity of doing so, and will have to pay the rates for the ensuing year. Earthquake.—A severe shock of earthquake was experienced yesterday afternoon about 2 o’clock, causing the houses to oscillate in a somewhat alarming manner. It appeared t o run from north to south.

The Waihora.—The s.s. Waihora will not arrive here until Saturday. Mail News.—We are compelled to hold over a large amount of interesting mail news until our next issue.

To Our Country Subscribers.— We beg to notify our country subscribers that Mr. Lange having given up delivery of our papers we are making fresh arrangements for the same to be left at the most central stores and places in the various outlying districts, and will duly advise them as to the same when completed. Doctor Innes.—This gentleman wishes us to notify his friends and patients that he has removed into the house in Childers Street lately in the occupation of Mr. T. Adams, and in close proximation to the Presbyterian Church.

Cycling.—A young English cyclist proposes to make a trip round the world on his bicycle, start from San Francisco, and cross the United States, by steamer from New York to Liverpool, ride to Dover, cross the channel to France, ride through Europe into Asiatic Turkey, thence through Persia and Turkestan into China, leaving Shangai by steamer and reaching ’Frisco after consuming a year on the journey.
