AUSTRALIAN.
[BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT.] [Reuter’s Telegrams.] Melbourne, Feb. 26. It is probable that an official enquiry will be held into the collision between the steamers Adelaide and Wairarapa in Port Phillip on Saturday last. The Argus to-day referring to the collision between the Wairarapa and Adelaide exonerates the local agent of the Union Co. (Mr. David Mills), who, in seems, was ignorant of the intended race. It has been ascertained that Mr. Bolam, late Inspector-General of Schools, died of apoplexy. The following are the latest betting quotations : —Newmarket Handicap—Countryman, 20 to 3 ; Coolabah, 20 to 3 ; Precious Stone, 14 to 1; Segenhoe, 10 to 1. Australian Cup—Martini-Henry, 20 to 3 ; Sardius, 20 to 3. Champion Stakes—Martini-Henry, 7 to 4 ; Sardius, 5 to 2 ; Navigator, 6 to 1: others, 10 to 1. Sydney, Feb. 26. The Hon. C. H. Reid, Minister of Education, who is seeking re-election, addressed a meeting of electors last evening. The gathering was very disorderly, and the meeting broke up in confusion.
