In Leipsic a great musical event has been the revival of Weber’s “ Oberon,” with the dialogue set to music, almost exclusively from Weber’s motifs, by Wullner. The task has been accomplished with extraordinary ability and fine feeling, but the great addition to the length of the work, as well as the change in style, which detracts from the original purpose of Weber’s opera, make the addition of doubtful value. Teresina Tua, the young violinist, and Herr Robert Fischhof, pianist from Vienna, where the novelties in the opening concert of the “Gewaulhaus” series, the last that will be given in the hall made famous by every illustrious artist from Mozart downwards. Not by tens, but by hundreds, can the giants in the realms of sound and song who have charmed the walls be counted. “ Tristan and Isolde ” has been the wonder of the Vienna opera season, and, with the exception of “ Parsiful,” the whole of Wagner’s works were to be given in December in the Austrian capital.
