PROPOSED COOK COUNTY CAVALRY TROOP.

[BY OUR SPECIAL REPORTER.] A meeting of settlers and gentlemen interested in the defence of Cook County in general, but Ormond in particular, was held at the Court house, Ormond, on Thursday evening, Mr. S. C. Coulton presiding. The question before the meeting was whether a cavalry troop or an ordinary volunteer corps should be formed. After discussion it was proposed by Mr. Cross, seconded by Mr. G. Smith, and carried unanimously—“ That a troop of cavalry be formed for Cook County District, head-quarters to be Ormond.” The Chairman having read extracts from the new Regulations re the number required to form a troop, attendance necessary, outfit, (fee., It was proposed by Mr. Currie, seconded by Mr. Cross, and carried—“ That a committee be formed to canvass the names of gentlemen who will be willing to enroll themselves as members, such committee to be composed of Messrs. Coulton, Boland, Currie, Devery, arid Smith. The committee to invite the officer commanding the district to attend the next meeting to be held in a fortnight, and at that meeting submit their report.” Mr. Boland said he deemed it his duty, as an old volunteer, to remind the meeting that it was useless for them to play at soldiering. The new Volunteer Regulations were now very stringent, A person enrolling would have to be sworn in before a Justice of the Peace, and once enrolled no one could resign without first having served twelve months. It was then proposed by Mr, Cross, and seconded by Mr. Burns, “ That all prelimi. naries for forming the troop and taking names of intending members be left in the hands of the Committee.” Mr. Wallace moved as an amendment and Mr. Currie seconded, “ That the Chairman do now take the names of those present desirous of joining the troop,” The amendment was carried, there being only three dissentients, and the following names were then taken :— S. C. Caulton, W. Currie, W. E. Cross, S. A. Smith, J. Wallace, W. Wills, E. E. Knights, E. O'Dwyer, W. W. Harris, B. Burae, B. Ashley, A. Peters, A. Devery, E. P. Paviour, E. Thompson, L. P. Cowen, B.
