Local and General.

Held Over. —Owing to the pressure on our space, we are compelled to hold over the report of the special meeting of the Harbor Board. Local Industry.—As an indication of the progress that has of late years been made in Poverty Bay, we have much pleasure in calling special attention to the fact that the largest cylinder that has ever been used in Poverty Bay, namely, the one at Mr. Hurrey’s new saw-mill, at Te Arai, is a local production, the boring having been successfully accomplished by Messrs. Brown and Smail, of Peel Street, who also furnished the metallic rings for the same. Mr. Hurry’s engineer informs us that he has never seen better work, and, as he has been connected with machinery all his life, this is reliable testimony to the efficiency of oui* local talent. Gisborne Harbor Board Empowering Bill.—On the adjournment of the Harbor Board meeting last night, Captain Porter laid before the members a rough draft Empowering Bill, which was most comprehensive in its scope, and embraced powers to borrow the necessary sum at 5 per cent., on debentures to be a first charge on the grant land, rents, drc., and the proposed reconstitution of the Board, together with a number of minor details relating thereto. Although numerous alterations in details will, of course, be made in the draft, yet the whole is so comprehensive that it must form the basis for any future operations having harber works for their object. The Conference.—The first meeting of the Conference Committee takes place this evening in the Borough Council offices at seven o’clock. The County Council.—The usual monthly meeting of the Cook County Council will take place on Thursday evening. Masonic.—The installation of the W.M. and investiture of officers of Lodge Turanganui, 1480, E.C., took place on Monday night last, in the lodge-room, Gisborne, when there was a good attendance, Bro. P.M. Chrisp conducting the ceremony. The following are the office-bearers for the ensuing year :—Bro. E. K. Brown, W.M.; Bro. E. P. Joyce, 1.P.M.; Bro. J. Finn, S.W.; Bro. J. Browne, Treasurer; Bro. F. Whitcombe, Secretary ; Bro. J. Whitby, S.D.; Bro. H. McKay; J.D. ; Bro. W. P. Finneran, 1.G.; Bro. A. J. Fyson Tyler. Mails.—Mails for Napier and Wellington will close this afternoon (Wednesday) at three o’clock, by the Southern Cross, which is expected to arrive early to-morrow morning from Auckland. A Maze.—“ Owing to the difficulty in finding the way about the new law courts, it has been decided to have 196 notice boards painted, 153 of which will bo for the ground floor.”—Jy/r.
