In the House of Commons to-day a debate was commenced upon a motion tabled by Mr. Parnell, for a vote of censure upon the Irish Executive, but the discussion was subsequently adjourned without a division being taken. The total quantity of wheat afloat for the United Kingdom is 1,800,000 quarters. Australian tallow is dull, and prices have declined by (id. to Is. per cwt. Beef—fair average quality is at 385.; mutton—ditto, Ils. 6d. Consols now remain at 101. New Zealand securities are now as follows :—Five per cent. 10-40 loan, 105 ; 5 per cent. 1889 loan, 104|: 4.J per cent, 1879-1904 loan, 100 ex div. ; 4 per cent, inscribed stock, 99. Cape Town, Feb, 9. Telegrams from Natal report thatCetewayo died suddenly yesterday. Cairo, Feb. 9. Telegrams from Bouakim state that a messenger has arrived there from Sinkat, the Governor of the latter town having sent an urgent appeal for help, the garrison and the inhabitants in the town being in extremity. However, it is impossible to send assistance, and the fate of the town is considered hopes less. Traders from Nubia report having met Gordon Pasha between Koronko and Abohamed. He was proceeding to Khartoum; Baker Pasha has been recalled from Souakim by the Khedive, and Admiral Hewitt (commanding the East Indian Squadron) has been invested with the command of the town and the troops stationed there. The town has been declared to be in a state of siege. Evening. Authentic intelligence is to hand that Gordon Pasha arrived yesterday safely at Berber, a town on the Nile above the Fifth Cataract, and is now well on his journey towards Khartoum. A full brigade of Egyptian troops is now under orders to proceed to Assouan, at the Fifth Cataract on the Nile, on the Nubian frontier, where preparations will be made with the view of opposing the advance of the Arabs in Egypt proper, should this be attempted. The troops will be officered throughout by Englishmen, and the force will be despatched with the least possible delay. (AGE SPECIALS,) (Per Ta Anau at the Bluff,) London, Feb. 4. All Europeans have quitted Khartoum, with the exception of the Greeks. The announcement that Bishop Moran had been selected by the Council of Cardinals as successor to the late Archbishop Vaughan, of Hydney, is premature. The report that Dr. Moran had been summoned to Rome for the purpose of being created a cardinal is also unfounded. The names of Rev. Mr. Walsh, President of Maynorth College, Dr. Moran, and Dr. Murray, Bishop of Maitland, will, on Monday, be submitted by the Propaganda to the Pope, for his approval. Lieut.-Colonel Stewart, who acted as Asst.Adjutant of the cavalry division in the expeditionary forces sent to Egypt in 1882, has been appointed Deputy-Governor of the Soudan. Sir J. Vogel is making good progress with his scheme to form a public company to undertake the construction and laying a duplicate cable between England and Australia. There wili be no difficulty in securing the requisite amount of capital for this undertaking upon advantageous terms. The company in course of formation by Sir J. Vogel offers to undertake the work on condition that the Australian colonies guarantee a subsidy of £4,000,000. The cause of death in the case of the distinguished French statesman M. Rouher was paralysis, and in the case of Mr. Wendell Phillips, the celebrated American anti-slavery agitator, ingina pectoris. The death is announced of Mr. Hayward, the well-known novelist,
