Auckland, Jan. 29. The cutter Daphin, Captain Burr, has arrived from Rarotanga, bringing tidings of a most disastrous gale there, causing the wreck of the Auckland schooners Agnes Bell, Atlantio, and Make* Ariki, with loss of even lives ; also, a fearful amount of damage to property en the island. Those drowned are Captain W. Munn and John Anderson, mate of the Agnes Bell; Captain Ayers, John Gates (mate), and Patrick Duncan (steward), of the Makes Ariki; and Stanley Heather (brother of A. Heather, merchant, of Auckland), and a Native. These three vessel* were all owned by Messrs Donald and Edenborough, Auckland. The masters of the Agnes Bell and the Makea Ariki refused to leave their vessels, hoping to the last to lave them. Captain Munn was well known in Dunedin in shipping circles. Insurances—Agnes Bell; New Zealand, £2,300: re-insured—Mutual, £3OO ; South British, £500; Union, £5OO. Cargo—United, £3,500. Makea Ariki: Hull-New Zealand, £1,000; cam, £5OO. Atlantic—Hull, New Zealand, £800; re-msured South British, £2OO. Cargo—New Zealand, £900; re-insured Colonial, £3CO. Tenders have been accepted for the new Hobson Street wharf at £6,263. Captain Fox hae been appointed pilot, vice W, Burgees, resigned. Christchurch, Jan. 22, Sailed—The Hawea, for North. Willington, Jan. 22. The Napier, which went ashore at Rangitikei, has been floated off, and, after temporary repairs have been executed, will come on here.
