[Per Electric Telegraph—Copyright,] [Reuter’s Telegrams,] London, Jan. 19, The Tinies to-day announces that as a result of the recent Conference at Sydney, the British Government will probably undertake the maritime defence of New Guinea. The P. and O. s.s. Mirzapore takes £30,000 in gold coin to Sydney, The ship Glance has arrived from Auckland (Sept. 23). It has transpired that, at the request of the British Government, Gordon Pasha (“ Chinese Gordon”) has accepted the charge of a special mission, and has started for Khartoum, Gordon Pasha will be answerable only to the British Government as regards his expedition, and has not accepted any command in the Egyptian army, Adelaide wheat (ex store) remains at 445,, and New Zealand ditto at 365. to 425.; Adelaide flour (ex store) 31s. The total quantity of wheat afloat for the United Kingdom is 1,880,090 quarters. The wool market is dull. The new arrivals to date for the first series of auctions this year now amount to 100,000 bales. The Colonial mails via San Francisco, dated Auckland, December 12, were delivered to-day. Cairo, Jan. 19. No further intelligence is to hand from the Soudan. The telegraph line from Upper Egypt to Khartoum has been cut by the rebel Arabs. New York, Jan, 19. The steamship City of Columbia, bound from Boston to Savannah, has been wrecked with great loss of life. According to the latest intelligence 120 persons were drowned. Madrid, Jan. 18. A now Ministry is being formed by Senor Can does. The present crisis has arisen in consequence of a disunion having occurred among the members of the Liberal party in the Cortes. (AGE SPECIALS.) London, Jan. 9. A brother-in-law of El Mahdi, the false prophet, has been captured by the Egyptian troops. He states that Mahdi will not oppose the Turkish Government if they take supreme control over the Soudan, but that both he and his followers are determined to expel all foreigners from Central Africa. The death is announced of Chandersen, a well-known Buddhist Scholar and Propagandist. Earl Granville, Secretary of State for the Foreign Department,, has approved of the agreement entered into between British shipowners and Lesseps as representing Suez Canal Company.
