GISBORNE HARBOR BOARD.

The annual meeting of the above Board was held in the Borough Council Offices, Lowe Street, yesterday, at noon. There were present his Worship the Mayor (Captain T. W. Porter) in the chair, and members Hepburn, Joyce, Smith, Townley, Kenny, and Brown, The Secretary opened the proceedings by stating that the meeting had been called in conformity with Section 55 of the Act, for the purpose of receiving and passing the annual audit of accounts. As the Board was a constituted and not an elected one, he did not think it necessary to formally elect a Chairman. The provisions of the Act bearing upon this point having been read and discussed, the Chairman laid the statement of accounts before the meeting. « Member Townley wished to know whether the Secretary had experienced much difficulty in auditing this year. The Secretary said he had not, because the suggestion made by the auditor last year as to collecting the manifestoes had been carried out, and found to assist the auditing to a great extent. With the exception of the item of £64 14s. 6d, due by Common, Shelton, & Co., for wharfage, there was only £1 4s. 6d. uncollected. Member Joyce wished to know whether the item of £64 14s. 6d. against Common, Shelton, & Co. was due for goods landed on their own or the public wharf ? The Secretary explained that it was for goods landed on their own wharf. He hadbeen waiting for directions as to what of procedure he was to adopt in order to g® the dues in. I After a few enquiries from Member SmitlN as to how the value of the wharves had been arrived at, Member Townley did not think they could do better than adopt the statement of accounts as presented. On the whole, the statement could not be considered as anything but very satisfactory. The working expenses were anything but heavy. He saw by the account that the revenue derived from the wharf was £9BO. Some time ago, he remembered, it had been proposed to lease, the wharves for £5OO a-year. He had supported the present system in spite of a great deal of opposition. Had the wharves been let in the manner sought by some membeys, the Board would have been the losers of £4BO. Now the difficulty of audit had been overcome the Board should reap the full

benefit, He had much pleasure in proposing i the adoption of the statement. Mr. Joyce having seconded the rpotion, it was unanimously adopted. The following is the statement of accounts, which, we think, reflects great credit on the Secretary:— receipts. £. s. d.
